The teachings of the Church (specifically Catholic) are incredibly thorough and detailed, and while that doesn't mean you have to agree with them or that they are good, they are generally completely misunderstood and dumbed-down by layman and non-believers alike (and quite often by ordained members as well haha). This is a incredibly brief description of something that has been written about for thousands of years so take it for what that is. The idea of Dante's Hell with fire and brimstone and endless tortures isn't really thought of in Catholic theology, the idea of Hell is removal from God. The only man in Hell is the man who refuses to truly apologize and acknowledge his sins. Lewis describes Hell as Napoleon muttering to himself that it was everyone else's fault for his demise and never reflecting on himself. It is for those who completely refuse to take responsibility for their actions and refuse any sort of repentance or forgiveness. But, as a Catholic, it is generally believed that those in Hell are few and far between.

The church's teaching of Hell is not monolithic and there isn't agreement on it even in specific sects.
